When I'm behind the wheel, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who knows how to drive. I'm probably not the only one who feels that way when they see someone pull one of these 5 bonehead moves that give me road rage.

1. The turning lane driver using it as at travel lane

When there was a backup way on Marginal Way in Portland last week, I watched some guy drive right down the turning lane, passing all the cars backed up and then try to get back into the travel lane ahead of everyone else waiting. Sorry buddy, but no one is going to let you in because you're an ass.

2. Avoiding the traffic Light

This is a common problem on Brighton Avenue. The light is red, so why not cut through Pinky's parking lot to avoid it? Don't. It's illegal and you're an ass.

3. Getting the jump on the light

You're at a red light waiting to cross the intersection. The driver across from you is turning right. The light turns green and he guns it right into your path to beat you into the intersection so he doesn't have to wait. You have to slam on the brakes to avoid t-boning him which would be completely his fault since you have the right of way.  He's an ass.

4. They don't know how a roundabout works

With more and more roundabouts being installed at intersections in Maine, you'd think people would understand how these work, but no. Pretty simple. Yield to any traffic already in the roundabout. Enter it when there is none and then exit. If you're not yielding to traffic or stopping when there is no traffic in the roundabout, you're an ass.

5. Waving at drivers to go at the 3 or 4-way stop

There's a thing called the right-of-way that should make it easy for drivers to navigate intersections with stops in more than one direction. It's simple really. If more than one car gets to the intersection at the same time, the one on the right goes first. If you wave someone to go through, you're messing up the whole system. If you have the right-of-way, I'll sit there until you go, because I'm not going to be the one at fault for getting into an accident by not following the right-of-way. You might think you're being generous, but you're being an ass.
